Normann Copenhagen

Founded in 1999, Normann Copenhagen has become an international ambassador for contemporary Danish design, combining clean Scandinavian aesthetics with playful innovation and meticulous craftsmanship. Rooted in the wider tradition of Danish design, the brand’s identity is shaped by simplicity, functionality and a deep respect for materials – values that must be reflected consistently across every market.

When it came to the localisation of their content, Normann Copenhagen knew that they needed to select a partner who understands the culture, heritage and design language that defines them, and who can convey all of this to the wider world with refinement and finesse. Their voice needed to feel confident, culturally attuned and authoritative, carrying across the heritage of Danish design while always remaining commercially compelling in each target market. In the words of their Brand Activation Manager Karl Johan Neborg: “We needed a partner we could trust with our voice.”

At Comunica, we have been supporting Normann Copenhagen with the localisation of newsletters, website content, promotional materials and other brand communications into English, German, French and Italian since 2007. Through each project, we ensure that their poetic and evocative style remains intact, helping them to create and maintain bonds with customers across Europe and beyond.

Translating Danish Design

The language used by Normann Copenhagen is as carefully crafted as the objects it describes. Product texts are seldom purely functional; they are evocative, sensory and often bordering on the poetic. Materials are not simply listed – they are described in a way that feels almost tactile. Shapes are framed as gestures, atmospheres, moods. The tone is elaborate and self-assured, and it assumes a reader of equal sophistication.

This presents a particular challenge in localisation, as word-for-word translation will never work for this kind of text – and even the best AI tools on the market today still struggle to transform them into something coherent, let along convincing, in other languages. What appears simple on the surface may rely on subtle connotations, rhythm, or a distinctly Scandinavian minimalism that does not map neatly onto other linguistic traditions. The translator must therefore balance precision with atmosphere, ensuring that the clarity associated with Danish design is preserved while also conveying its warmth and tactility.

When this balance is lost, the effect is immediate. Over-embellishment can dilute the brand’s understated elegance; overly literal translation can flatten its poetry. In both cases, the delicate bond between brand and consumer risks being weakened. Successful localisation therefore demands not only linguistic expertise, but aesthetic sensitivity – an ability to recreate the emotional and cultural resonance of the original text in a way that feels entirely natural in the target market. That is precisely what we brought to the mix.

As Karl Johan Neborg, Brand Activation Manager at Normann Copenhagen, puts it: “We very much appreciate Comunica’s knowledge and understanding of Nordic culture and Danish design traditions. Their deep familiarity with our heritage, and with Scandinavian cultural values more broadly, equips them to deliver exceptional results on each localisation project.”

From 3daysofdesign to CPH:DOX

Beyond its year-round brand communications, Normann Copenhagen actively participates in high-profile cultural and design events that bring its universe into the physical world. Among the most prominent are 3daysofdesign – Copenhagen’s annual design festival, which transforms the city into a multi-day showcase of furniture, lighting and interior innovation – and CPH:DOX, one of the world’s leading documentary film festivals, known for its intersection of film, art and social debate.

At 3daysofdesign, Normann Copenhagen opens its showroom as an immersive exhibition space, presenting new collections through carefully curated scenography and conceptual installations. During CPH:DOX, the brand has contributed to the furnishing and shaping of festival spaces, integrating its design pieces into environments that host screenings, discussions and cultural exchange. In both contexts, the brand steps beyond product presentation and becomes part of a wider creative dialogue that celebrates Danish ingenuity.

Participation in these events is a form of real-world communication. The message is conveyed not only in Danish, but in the universal language of aesthetics, materiality and spatial experience – and in the many spoken languages of the international visitors who attend. Press materials, exhibition texts, interviews and digital content must resonate with design professionals, journalists and culturally engaged audiences from across Europe, North America and Asia.

For translators, this demands more than just linguistic accuracy. It requires an understanding of the events themselves, of their status within the global design and cultural calendar, and of the Copenhagen spaces they temporarily transform. To localise effectively, the translator must think spatially as well as verbally – stepping into the showroom, the screening venue, the city – ensuring that the language carries not only information, but atmosphere, context and cultural significance. That is why we carefully selected each of the linguists we use on this account, opting for translators with a background in design and an acute understanding of Copenhagen and its cultural spirit.
