European Accessibility Act
As of 2025, digital accessibility in Europe is no longer optional. The European Accessibility Act establishes several important requirements and imposes penalties on companies and organisations that fall short. Crucially, compliance often requires language support, as it is contingent not only on technical compatibility but also on the clarity and structure of information.

What Are the EAA Requirements?
The EAA requires the digital products and services covered to be perceivable, operable, understandable and compatible with assistive technologies. This includes clear structure, readable text, accessible navigation and alternatives for non-text content such as captions or audio descriptions. Where content is offered in multiple languages, these accessibility requirements must be met consistently for each language version. Falling short risks reputational damage, fines and legal consequences related to discrimination.
Get a QuoteCompliance Audit – Mono or Multilingual
We can audit websites for accessibility compliance in a single language or across multiple language versions, identifying gaps that may prevent users from accessing or understanding your content. You receive a clear, actionable report outlining the issues and risks and proposing concrete solutions, including language-specific considerations where relevant. We can also take care of implementation, making it simple for you to rest assured that your web content is both compliant and accessible.
Get StartedFrom Alt Text to Closed Captions
The purpose of the Act is to ensure digital content is accessible for people with a wide range of disabilities. Some of the elements it covers include alt text descriptions on images, captions and subtitles on audio-visual material and technical compatibility with assistive technologies. It also stipulates that information must be clearly structured, readable and navigable, including for users who rely on screen readers or keyboard navigation.
Get StartedAccessibility Best Practice
Accessible content starts with how it is written. Best practice includes using clear and consistent language, short sentences, meaningful headings, and descriptive link text. Unexplained acronyms and overly complex phrasing should also be avoided. Elements that are often overlooked – such as error messages, form labels, image descriptions and the accessibility of translated content – can significantly affect usability. We provide consultancy on the most effective approach to accessible content, helping you identify what to consider at drafting stage and how to build accessibility into your content from the outset and in translation.

What is the European Accessibility Act?
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is EU legislation designed to improve access to digital products and services for people with disabilities. It establishes common accessibility requirements across Member States and applies from June 2025. The aim is to ensure that digital content and services are usable, understandable and compatible with assistive technologies.
Who is covered by the Act?
The Act applies to a wide range of private-sector organisations offering covered products and services in the EU, including websites, mobile apps, e-commerce platforms, banks, transportation services and digital communications. Public bodies are already subject to related accessibility rules under existing legislation. The obligations apply based on where services are offered rather than where a company is established, meaning non-EU organisations – including US companies – may also be in scope if they do business in the EU.
What does the Act mean for multilingual websites?
The Act does not require organisations to publish content in multiple languages. However, where content is offered in more than one language, accessibility requirements must be met consistently for each language version. This means that structure, clarity, navigation and accessible alternatives must work equally well across all languages provided. This is one of the advantages of working with a multilingual communications agency on your compliance work – we will make sure you are up to code not just in one language, but in all.
How can you help me ensure compliance?
We carry out accessibility audits for mono and multilingual websites, identifying gaps and areas of risk against applicable requirements. You receive a clear report with prioritised recommendations, and we can also handle implementation – from content improvements to language-specific fixes – helping you move efficiently towards compliance.
Isn’t EAA compliance a technical issue?
No. While technical compliance is essential, many accessibility barriers are created at content level – through unclear language, poor structure, vague links, or inaccessible multimedia. Addressing these issues early can significantly improve usability and reduce effort later.
